Units & Conversions

Discover how Encamp handles units for Tier II reporting.

The most commonly used unit for Tier II reporting is pounds. However, there are instances where it may be more convenient or even necessary to input data in different units, such as gallons or barrels. This becomes especially relevant if your inventory management for a certain product involves units other than pounds, or if the reporting portal enforces unit requirements that differ from pounds. In this article, we will explore how Encamp accommodates these complexities, offering you enhanced ease and flexibility.

✏️
NOTE: By default, Encamp's system aligns with the reporting unit accepted by the reporting portal. Therefore, if a portal only accepts measurements in pounds, then pounds will be your default selection.

Leveraging Product Densities

Recognizing the need for flexibility when entering data, we utilize product densities. By including the density of a product within the Encamp product catalog, you can unlock additional unit options for data input.

For instance, if you've specified the density of a product in pounds per gallon (pounds / gallon), you'll be able to switch between pounds and gallons when entering data. Our intelligent platform offers this flexibility while you’re completing the report within Encamp, then automatically selects the correct unit when submitting your report within the portal.

Handling Storage Location Complexity

Different state portals often impose additional rules regarding what units can be reported at each product’s storage location. In some cases, the units on the storage location quantities need to match the unit reported for the product (e.g., a product reported in pounds must have all storage location quantities also reported in pounds); in other cases, they do not.

Just like with product quantities, providing a corresponding density for a product allows you more flexibility in the units you can select for storage locations.

Examples of Reporting Scenarios

Example 1

You are reporting for a liquid at a facility in Indiana, where the portal requires all product amounts and product storage location amounts to be reported in pounds.

  • Initially, you will only be able to input data in pounds.
  • Once you add a density that includes gallons (such as pounds / gallon) in Encamp, you'll now have the option to input quantities in either pounds or gallons.
  • If quantities are entered in gallons, Encamp automation will automatically convert this back to pounds before entering your data into the Indiana portal.

Example 2

You are reporting for a product at a facility in New Mexico, where the portal requires product amounts to be in pounds, but permits storage location amounts to be reported in pounds, kilograms, tons, metric tons, gallons, liters, or barrels.

  • As in Example 1, you initially can only input product amounts in pounds, and adding a density to the product unlocks additional unit options.
  • However, storage location amounts can be input in one of the available seven units regardless of whether a density has been entered.

Example 3

You are reporting for a liquid at a facility in Oregon, where the portal specifically requires liquids to be reported in gallons, and storage location amounts always need to be in the same unit as the product.

  • Similar to the previous examples, you initially can only input product and storage location amounts in gallons, but adding a density to the product unlocks additional unit options.
  • However, in this case, the storage location units will always match the unit used for the product.
  • So, if a density (such as pounds / gallon) was added, you could input the data as either pounds or gallons, but the application will not allow you to enter the product amount in pounds and the storage location amount in gallons, for example.
😀
TIP: This flexibility isn't limited to your Tier II reports. It's also applicable to the year-round data module within Encamp.
